The Skin You’re In by Nancy Rue – My Review

Zonderkidz (April 9, 2010)
This book is written for young women approaching their teen years and wondering about so many things that go along with school life and society for us “girls”. Although I may be an adult I can still remember what it was like to be in school where looks and athleticism were just as important or perhaps more so than being yourself especially if you are brainy and don’t fit with the popular athletic and richer kids surrounding you. Oh sure the kids have changed some I’m sure thanks to the world changing as the years progress but the dynamics of children in school doesn’t change that much.

In reading this book I soon wished I’d had the opportunity to read and understand what I mean to God and that my uniqueness is what makes me special at a much younger age. If I was just like everyone else there wouldn’t be a “me” it would be an “us” like an army of robots programmed to look, act and speak alike and in unison. I sure like being a Jane or Amy or Melissa rather than #67 or #1billion whatever. Sounds rather boring doesn’t it? While I grew up there weren’t any books like this available to my knowledge and believe me I was such a voracious reader that I read and still do just about anything I can get my hands on. Back then that meant I spent tons of time in Libraries and Bookstores. Though more and more information is available electronically these days the part about reading hasn’t changed much for me I just do my preliminary “legwork” via my fingertips rather than in person.

This book was a quick read for me but girls out there who pick up a copy of this can easily break it down and go through a chapter a week or a day, however works best for them. Rue has each chapter sectioned out so this would also work well for individual reading and then group discussion at whatever depth the participants are comfortable sharing. Girls in today’s world definitely need some positive reinforcement that different is a wonderful way to be when that’s how God created you. Thanks to Nancy Rue, Zonderkidz and of course our Lord and Savior who engineered the connections to make this book happen they now have it loud and clear with plenty of scriptures to hold in their memories whenever things get tricky or difficult with those of the world around us.

I suppose I should wind this up or I’ll have a review that is longer than the book itself. Oh and be sure to keep your eyes peeled as I will be offering copies of this book in a giveaway here soon. So be prepared to send your daughters, grandaughters, nieces, younger sisters and so on over this direction when that happens or even better surprise them with the book if you are a winner but not in that age group.
